How Nuclear Power Plant Works

This is a video which animated in a simple manner on how nuclear power plant works. This is a Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) in the nuclear power plant. All credit goes to Sean McCreary.

  3. Nice video made... Good effects :D It looks a simpler process than a normal coal power generator. Those long yellow rods inside the reactor, those are the control rods right? I know what they do basically, but what is the thing made of?? How they actually control the process of fission?

  4. Ang Jit Yong...i would like to share these infos with u....a control rod is a rod made of chemical elements capable of absorbing many neutrons without fissioning themselves.....they are used in nuclear reactors to control the rate of fission of uranium and plutonium....how they control is by the design of the rods and also the materials used creating these rods.... ;)

  5. I just read about control rods on the net... It is mostly made of silver, indium and cadmium. There are also other materials as Govinderan said. Operators of BWRs use the coolant flow through the core to control reactivity by varying the speed of the reactor recirculation pumps (an increase in coolant flow through the core improves the removal of steam bubbles, thus increasing the density of the coolant/moderator with the result of increasing power).

  6. oh thanks. the video is very informative. we need more this kind of video to get more clear idea about nuclear power. plus, the videos on nuclear should be more exposed to the general public.

  7. The control rods in nuclear reactor are used to prevent disaster caused by chain reaction that occur so quickly that the reactor would explode. Chain reaction could be easily sustained in a reactor containing fuel elements and a moderator.Control rods are solid cylinders of metal constructed of some material that has an ability to absorb neutrons. One of the metals most commonly used in the manufacture of control rods is cadmium.
Control rods' purpose is to maintain the ratio of neutrons used up in fission compared to neutrons produced during fission at about 1:1. In such a case, for every one new neutron that is used up in causing a fission reaction, one new neutron becomes available to bring about the next fission reaction.

  8. Good. Now we know how a nuclear generator creates energy. Even though the video is not very detailed, the steps are shown. Thank you for sharing. One question, about the "extreme heat" shown in the video, how 'extreme' does it go?

  9. nice video, easy to understand. so this Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) is somekind of recycle machine right?? the process seems so simple can can operate for a long period time. are these BWR operate manually or automaticly?? these kind of mechanism can be good and benefits for us where we need to build the nuclear plant which are reliable, cheap and most important safe to people.

  10. I have a question... When the uranium pellet enters the yellow rod into the reactor, how does the particle ACTUALLY fired? Does it have an igniter?

very interesting video..now we know how nuclear energy is generated and i hope many videos like this will be publised in television to give good information about nuclear energy expecially to our malaysian people to ensure that they will give good respond and support for developing nuclear energy in our country,,tq

Yeah, you are right on your comments, haha actually many information regarding nuclear can be found on the net, and i am amazed with your initiative to read up rather than wait our comments. Tq.

    @Govinderan Mageswaran, ME083544
thx for answering for us, it is right! perfectly right answer, tq!

yes, you are right too. Good information you have there. Thanks for sharing with everyone!

"extreme temperature" ranging 600 Celsius on the average. As in the video shows, it is just to boil the water to create high pressurize vapor to turn the turbine to generate electricity

  15. First of all i like thank you guys to post this video. This vidoe have given enough knowledge about BWR. But can i know the safety features in this BWR.

  16. hello i would like to answer vaagesan question on the safety features in the BWR.Actually the BWR potentially more stable and safe.Looking at the safety angle the BWR was fix with actuation of the reactor shutdown system (a part of the
safety protection system)where it stops the nuclear reactor operation securely. It mainly concern in the case when a break accident occurs to reactor coolant system piping and the reactor coolant is lost from a reactor core .This is one of the safety on BWR.
To the seniors i have to say the video was actually awesome . congrats to Sean McCreary.
Perhaps you should upload more videos such as this when explaining all the technical part in the power plant,So we(readers) could get a better picture on what you explaining. To all of you thanks a lot.You guys had pass a tremendous information on the nuclear. Thanks and good luck ..vimalan a/l genasan ..vimalan_12@yahoo.com
