Nuclear Power Plant or Nuclear Reactor????

This midnight spam is just a light one .... so after the heavy stuff's below, now let me share with you all something factual ... and fun of course. so here it goes~

Do you know the difference between a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and a Nuclear Reactor? Anyone???? The clue is in the picture itself~

Alright, maybe you do know it, but to those who don't, I would like to inform you that the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and a Nuclear Reactor are actually the same thing. The only difference is that, the Nuclear Reactor doesn't produce or generate any electricity while the Nuclear Power Plant does =).

Just like the picture above, we can see that this is a Nuclear Power Plant. Why? Because it has the turbine and generator. If we remove those 2 components, than we can call the picture above a Nuclear Reactor. Thus we can say that Nuclear Power Plant NEEDS a Nuclear Reactor to be operational while the Nuclear Reactor can just function on its own =D

  3. hey buddies thanks for the info.Since we talking about the difference between a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and a Nuclear Reactor my question is what will be the main idea in disigning the nuclear power plant. As for nuclear reactors it is usually designed to operate in an under moderated condition so that the moderator temperature coefficient of reactivity is negative. But how about the NPP.thanks ( VIMALAN A/l GENASAN vimalan_12@yahoo.com )

  4. Hi Vimalan, just to answer your question in a very simple way here. Nuclear Reactor is the subset of Nuclear Power Plant. Nuclear Reactor must exist in Nuclear Power Plant but not the other way round. Hope it enlightens you up. =) Do keep asking if you still have any doubts and sorry for our late feedbacks as we are quite busy lately.

  5. Modern Military submarine are using nuclear as their main source,am i right? And they are Nuclear reactors right? Can we use NPP to power the modern ship/submarine

Hello there! Yes you are right, there exists nuclear powered submarine such as USS Nautilus and the USS Michigan. I do believe some country aside from US does have their own nuclear submarine too. Also, there exists nuclear merchant ships such as N. S. Savannah.

Next, you are right in saying that nuclear reactor exists in these submarine. However the size of it is much smaller compared to the normal nuclear reactors in the nuclear power plants. This is because, more power generation will need a much bigger nuclear reactor.

So the conclusion is that, yes we can use nuclear reactor to powered up the submarine but we cant use the nuclear power plant to the submarine.
