As we all know, nuclear is not something new. It has been existence since the early 1940 . But here is a fun fact ... is it a bomb or energy? how do we differentiate them? @,@
The answer is simple:
1) Control. The fission process in nuclear power plant is controllable. While the fission process in nuclear bomb is not controllable because they desire as many fission process before detonation for a more damaging effect.
2) Fuel Enrichment. Fuel Enrichment is about the concentration of the U-235 used. This is because uranium 235 is the useful isotope for nuclear activity. Hence, the concentration of U-235 isotope in a nuclear power plant is just 3-5%. On the other hand, U-235 in the nuclear bomb is at least 90-95%. This means that fuel enrichment for a nuclear bomb is very high as is regard as Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU).

hey there...
ReplyDeleteis that the make up of the fat man bomb?...and how are the fission process contolled in the npp?

@darshan .. yes it is the fat man.
ReplyDeleteFission process are controlled, as the nucleon production rate / fission rate are control by using the control rod and with the help of poisons. This means that, for npp, we will control the amount of neutron, as too much of it will cause the incident of Chernobyl
is possible for us to use the uranium 235 isotope content is high to generate more electricity? If that happens it is possible to apply the same explosion in Chernobyl?

As the fission process in nuclear power plant is controllable,we dont have to scare and just proceed with the first nuclear project in the country. nuclear for better live..

The fission reaction in an atomic is somehow similar to the physics of a controlled nuclear power plant, but they must be engineered differently( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reactor_physics). It is impossible to convert a nuclear reactor to cause a true nuclear explosion, or for a nuclear reactor to explode the way a nuclear explosive does

ReplyDeletewe believe that there is not a need to go for higher U-235 concentration. This is because;
1) fission process safety might be hard to control if there are to many fissile materials
2) the material thermal ability is a majoring factor that limits the power plant power output.
3) increase cost to produce higher concentration of U-235 and you might be suspected for amassing nuclear destruction weapons
hence, it is optimum for a npp to have around 3-4% of U-235 concentration

ReplyDeletethanks for your positive comment!

yes, you are right! thats why we post this as a fun fact, because most people do not know it~ =)

ReplyDeletehey. nice interesting facts. since U-235 is rare, needing 90% of it would make it very hard to make right? HIROSHIMA! thanks for the information.

ReplyDeleteyes you are right!
in lay man terms, a ratio of 10 natural uranium have to be extracted in get a 5% enriched uranium (which means 5% U-235), so you can imagine how many natural uranium is used to get it to be 90%.
Very interesting indeed. Not trying to support or imply anything, but it seems to me that weapons development might be the key to technological advancement. Really hope it's more one sided towards peace...

wow..very interesting fact. Other than U-235, is there any other type of uranium can be use for fuel enrichment?
